Messages For Week 9
Before we get to the recap there are a couple notes to be addressed;
If anyone is UNABLE to play in the year end outing please let Todd Allen know ASAP!!!
Also just a quick reminder regarding pace of play; we should all be playing ready golf which should help keep the pace of play on track and comfortable for all groups. The average 9 hole round for a foursome should take about 2.5 hours give or take.
Now on to the good stuff!
What a night on the course! From flawless cards to leaderboard shakeups, here is how everything went down this week.
The High-Honor Roll:
Double Bogey-Free & Low Scores
Going "redless" is no easy task, but six players managed to keep double bogeys completely off their cards. Big shouts to Ryan Bates, Nick Matwijec, Eric Kasper, Joe Firley, Frank Gentile, and Will Cotter for their incredibly steady play.
Among that group, Will Cotter put on an absolute clinic. He fired the low round of the night with a 38 and caught fire on the greens, needing just 12 putts. That incredible performance officially moves him into the league lead for low putting average at a razor-thin 15.3 putts per round.
Meanwhile, Tom Gannon put together his best golf of the year, carding a season-low 46. That clutch round secured him the league's low net score of the night at an incredible 24.
Birdies & Skins
The field combined for 8 birdies on the night, including a few multi-birdie performances and clutch shots:
Matt Smaldon: Back-to-back birdies on #10 and #11.
Eric Kasper & Todd Allen: Birdied #10.
Jon Hazeltine: Birdied #14, set up perfectly by his 5'4" Closest to the Pin (CTP) shot.
Ryan Bates & Frank Gentile: Tamed the par-5 15th for birdies.
Will Cotter: Capped off his night with a birdie on the par-5 18th.
Three of those birdies translated directly into cash, with 4 skins awarded at $7.50 each:
Matt Smaldon (Birdie on 11)
Jon Hazeltine (Birdie on 14)
Will Cotter (Par on 16, Birdie on 18)
Match Recaps:
Two Blowouts and a Nail-Biter
Our three featured match previews delivered plenty of drama, resulting in two massive lopsided victories and one hard-fought draw.
Cotter vs. Allen & Hazeltine: Will Cotter went on a revenge tour. Playing a dual card against Todd Allen and Jon Hazeltine, Cotter single-handedly racked up a whopping 19.5 points. It was sweet retribution for the beatdown Allen and Hazeltine handed the Cotter/Lyman duo last week at the Crestweed.
Gentile vs. Beckwith & Dudeck: Frank Gentile also put his team on his back while playing a dual card. Frank secured 20 out of 24 available points, fueled by a dominant 11.5-point haul over Pat Beckwith, who suffered an uncharacteristically rough night. This performance catapulted Frank into the Individual Points Lead and extended his impressive winning streak to 8 matches in a row.
Pomeroy & Woodlan vs. Matwijec & Sreca: The team of Keith Pomeroy and Ben Woodlan needed to right the ship, and they did exactly that. They went toe-to-toe with the defending champions, Nick Matwijec and Mike Sreca, battling to a gritty 12-12 tie.
Leaderboard Shakeup
That 12-12 tie had massive implications at the top. The defending champs (Matwijec/Sreca) have been knocked off the peak of the mountain, dropping into a tie for 4th place alongside Gentile and Gentile.
They sit just 3.5 points out of the top spot, which is now officially occupied by our new league leaders: Dave Gagnon and Tom Gannon.
WEEK 10 Preview
There is ONE match that is making headlines heading into week 10 and that is the HEAVYWEIGHT Bout between the teams of Kasper and Firley against Bates and Miller. These two teams sit near the top of the standing in 2nd and 3rd respectfully and are just 2.5 and 3 points behind first place. During the Crestweed Scramble these two teams played to a 12 - 12 tie. Will the non scramble format result in a different outcome or will this be another one of those bare knuckled street fights that end up in a draw?!
Good luck to everyone next week! Keep the ball in the short grass!
